Terms of Service

Last updated: April 2026

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Uncoupled ("the Platform"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use the Platform. The Platform is operated by Uncoupled Inc., a company incorporated in Canada.

2. Description of Service

Uncoupled is a platform that connects individuals navigating separation or divorce with family lawyers in Canada. Lawyers submit evidence of their licence to practise, and a lawyer's profile shows a verified mark once Uncoupled has confirmed their standing with their provincial law society. We provide educational resources, a lawyer directory, consultation booking tools, and a guided divorce timeline. Uncoupled does not provide legal advice. All legal advice is provided by independent lawyers who use the Platform.

3. User Accounts

You must provide accurate and complete information when creating an account. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials. You must be at least 18 years of age to use this Platform. You agree to notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account.

4. Client Users

Uncoupled is free for all client users. By using the Platform, you understand that Uncoupled facilitates connections with lawyers but does not itself provide legal services. Any lawyer you connect with through Uncoupled is an independent professional. Uncoupled does not guarantee outcomes of any legal matter. Information provided on the Platform is for educational purposes only and should not be considered legal advice. When you request a consultation with a lawyer, our Consultation Terms also apply.

5. Lawyer Users

Lawyers who join Uncoupled must maintain valid bar membership and licensing in their listed provinces. Lawyers agree to the subscription pricing as outlined during onboarding. Lawyers are responsible for the accuracy of their profile information. Uncoupled reserves the right to suspend or remove any lawyer profile that violates these terms or receives verified complaints.

6. User Content

Users submit content to the Platform, including messages, consultation requests, profile details and application materials. You are responsible for the content you submit. It must be accurate and lawful, and it must not be misleading, defamatory or harassing, or infringe the rights of others. Uncoupled reserves the right to remove content that violates these terms.

7. Limitation of Liability

Uncoupled is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for any damages arising from the use of the Platform, including but not limited to the outcome of any legal proceedings, the conduct of any lawyer, or any loss of data. Our total liability is limited to the amount you have paid to Uncoupled in the preceding 12 months.

8. Privacy

Your use of Uncoupled is also governed by our Privacy Policy. By using the Platform, you consent to the collection and use of information as described in our Privacy Policy.

9. Subscription Fees and Payments

Lawyers who join the platform agree to pay a subscription fee of $79 per month plus applicable taxes. Each lawyer's first month is free, once per lawyer. Lawyers can earn account credit by referring other lawyers, as described on the platform; credit only reduces future subscription bills, has no cash value, and ends when the subscription ends. Uncoupled uses Stripe for secure payment processing.

If you delete your account, your subscription ends immediately and the unused part of the current billing period isn't refunded. To keep access until the end of the period, cancel your subscription instead.

10. Lawyer Obligations

Lawyers must provide evidence of their licence to practise. Uncoupled confirms each lawyer's standing with their provincial law society. Where we cannot confirm standing, or where a lawyer's standing lapses or is suspended, we may remove the profile from the platform.

By creating a lawyer account on Uncoupled, you agree to respond to retainer confirmations promptly and honestly, and within 7 days of receiving notification. When a client reports that they've retained your services through Uncoupled, you'll receive an email notification to confirm the retainer or to tell us the person is not your client. If you tell us they are not your client, the request is cleared and the client is asked to record the correct lawyer.

All information on your Uncoupled profile must be accurate, current, and not misleading. This includes your areas of practice, years of experience, fee structure, languages spoken, and availability for consultations.

You agree to respond to consultation requests in a reasonable timeframe, either by accepting, proposing a new time, or declining.

11. Governing Law

These Terms of Service are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. Any disputes arising from these terms or the use of the Platform shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Ontario.

12. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms of Service from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes via email or through the Platform. Continued use of the Platform after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

13. Intellectual Property

All content on the Uncoupled platform, including text, graphics, logos, educational articles, timeline data, and software, is the property of Uncoupled or its content providers and is protected by Canadian copyright law.

User-generated content: by submitting messages, profile details, application materials, or other content to the platform, you grant Uncoupled a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to use, display, and distribute that content in connection with operating the platform. You retain ownership of your content.

You may not reproduce, distribute, modify, or create derivative works from platform content without our prior written consent. You may not scrape, crawl, or systematically download content from the platform.

14. Dispute Resolution

If a dispute arises between you and Uncoupled, we encourage you to contact us first at hello@uncoupled.me so we can try to resolve it informally.

If informal resolution is not possible, both parties may choose to attempt mediation before initiating any court proceeding. If both parties agree to mediation, it will be conducted in Ontario by a mutually agreed-upon mediator.

Either party may proceed with legal action in the courts of Ontario as described in the Governing Law section.

15. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Uncoupled, its founders, officers, employees, and agents from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or in connection with your use of the platform, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of a third party.

16. Force Majeure

Uncoupled is not liable for any failure or delay in performing its obligations under these Terms where such failure or delay results from circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to natural disasters, government actions, internet or telecommunications failures, cyberattacks, or pandemics.
