How we verify lawyers

Reaching out to a lawyer for the first time is hard enough without wondering whether they're who they say they are. Here's exactly what we check, and what we don't.

Every lawyer submits evidence of their licence

An application can't be approved without it.

We check their standing on the public register

We look them up on their provincial law society's public register and confirm they're currently listed in good standing. A person does this, not a script.

Verified lawyers carry the mark

Once we've confirmed standing, the lawyer's profile shows a verified mark and a line explaining what we checked.

Lawyers awaiting the check are still listed

Verification takes us time, and it isn't the lawyer's job to wait on us. A profile marked "Verification in progress" means we haven't finished our check yet. It says nothing about the lawyer.

What the mark doesn't mean

Verification is a standing check, not an endorsement. We don't assess, rate or rank lawyers. Ratings on profiles come from clients who had a consultation through Uncoupled, not from us. Choosing the right lawyer is still your decision.

If a lawyer's standing lapses or is suspended, or we can't confirm it, we may remove their profile from the platform. If something on a profile looks wrong to you, email us at support@uncoupled.me and we'll look into it.
