How we write and check our content
Separation and divorce are hard enough without confusing or outdated information. This page explains how we write our content, where our facts come from and how we keep them current.
Who writes our content
Our timelines, articles and tools are written and kept up to date by Uncoupled. Some articles about choosing and working with a lawyer are written by our co-founder, Kunal Bhasin. Uncoupled is not a law firm, and our content is not written or reviewed by a lawyer acting for you.
Where our facts come from
We use primary sources first: federal and provincial legislation, court rules and forms, court fee schedules, and government and court websites. Where we rely on a public legal education organization or another secondary source, we say so. We link to the source next to the fact it supports.
How we check facts
Figures that can change, such as court fees, response deadlines and child support amounts, are kept in one place with their source and the date we last checked them. Our child support calculator uses the Federal Child Support Tables that came into force on October 1, 2025.
How we keep content current
We re-check our timelines and articles when a law, court fee, form or support table changes, and on a regular schedule. The "facts checked" date on each page only changes when the facts have been re-checked.
Information, not legal advice
Our content is general information. It can't account for every situation, and it doesn't create a lawyer-client relationship. If your situation is urgent or complex, or you're unsure what applies to you, speak with a family lawyer. If you're in danger, call 911.
Corrections
If something looks wrong or out of date, email support@uncoupled.me. We review every report and correct errors as quickly as we can.
How lawyers appear on Uncoupled
Lawyers pay a subscription to be listed. Paying doesn't affect what our content says, and we don't rank lawyers. Our verification is a check of a lawyer's standing with their provincial law society, not an endorsement. How we verify lawyers
