How child support works in Ontario

Child support in Ontario is calculated using the Federal Child Support Guidelines, which provide province-specific tables based on the paying parent's gross annual income and the number of children. The tables account for Ontario's tax rates, so amounts differ slightly from other provinces.

In Ontario, divorce proceedings are handled by the Superior Court of Justice. The key provincial family law legislation is the Family Law Act (Ontario). For a detailed overview of family law in Ontario, see our Ontario divorce timeline.

What affects the amount

The province where the paying parent lives (tax rules differ by province)
Their gross annual income before taxes
The number of children
How parenting time is shared (sole, shared 40%+ each, or split)
Special expenses like child care, medical, and extracurricular costs are additional
Income over $150,000 uses a percentage method for the amount above that threshold
